In Chapter 1114 of One Piece, it was revealed that Joy Boy was the first person in history to be called a pirate. But why did he choose to live this way? Let’s explore that.

Were Pirates a Seafaring People?

As I’ve written in previous articles, the origins of Joy Boy being labeled a pirate are intriguing. It seems likely that Joy Boy felt constrained by the idea that humanity could only live on land. Even in modern times, the sea is a harsh and dangerous environment, so it must have been even more so during the Void Century, roughly 900 years ago.

While there was an advanced civilization, humans have never been able to fully control nature, even today. Unlike the Fish-Men, who can breathe underwater, humans couldn’t make the sea their home. Joy Boy, however, likely refused to be bound by such notions, deciding to make the sea his home by living on a ship instead of land.

The sea is vast compared to land! It’s possible that, like Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates, Joy Boy sailed from place to place, helping people who were oppressed. This could have led to him being seen as a threat by the rulers of various nations, labeling him as an “outlaw” and ultimately calling him a “pirate.”

I believe Joy Boy simply wanted to live freely, but his lifestyle and actions were likely seen as disruptive by the rulers of the time. Moreover, I suspect Joy Boy was trying to connect all the worlds.
