Commonalities Between the Lizard King Hanfuda and Kaido! Advocates for the Superiority of Zoan-Type Abilities?
In the latest ONE PIECE Volume 109 SBS, it was revealed which former Warlord was defeated by Ace! It seems to have been a guy named “Lizard King Hanfuda,” who was a collector of Zoan-type Devil Fruits… Let’s dive into that!
The Lizard King Hanfuda
In Kuma’s flashback, it was revealed that Saint Saturn chose Kuma as the successor to the Warlord defeated by Fire Fist Ace. Many readers must have wondered who that defeated Warlord was. Personally, I had speculated that it might have been someone like Silver Axe, a former member of the Rocks Pirates. Also, I thought that it might be a character not very influential to the story and that it might be something explained in passing or even skipped over entirely. Even if there were questions about it in the SBS of the volumes, I thought it might be skipped, but this time it was introduced quite straightforwardly as “this guy…”
The introduced pirate “Lizard King Hanfuda” is a tall man, standing at 5 meters and 14 centimeters, with a build similar to Kidd. He wields a rather challenging weapon: a scythe with a spiked iron ball attached to a chain on the opposite end for swinging. His appearance, with a masked head, gives off the impression of either a villainous wrestler or a hardcore rock musician. To become a Warlord, he must have had ambitions as a pirate, and it’s likely he had some concrete dreams or goals. Still, from the impression I get, he might have been a character with a personality that mixed elements of Doflamingo and Crocodile, with a hint of Arlong’s vibe.
Visually, he seems more like a character designed for an anime movie than the main storyline, but given that he has a solid design, it seems likely that some scenario involving Hanfuda’s appearance was prepared. Perhaps he was originally created as a character for an anime movie where Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates would face him as an enemy, and when that didn’t materialize, he was turned into a Warlord defeated by Ace to pay homage to him. I personally like the design, so I would have liked to see his battle with Ace. Moreover, Hanfuda was a collector of Zoan-type Devil Fruits, especially the Ancient Zoans, which is something he shares with Kaido.
I wonder if Hanfuda’s original setting, which was shelved, was inherited by the Emperor of the Sea, Kaido.
