Thank you for reading this article about why Luffy’s straw hat doesn’t grow larger when he uses his Gear 5th abilities. I’m your host, Jack Ocean.

When Luffy activates the Gomu Gomu no Gigant in Gear 5th, the straw hat remains the same size, even though his body enlarges.
Could there be a reason for this?
Let’s delve into it!
The Straw Hat Doesn’t Enlarge?
When Luffy awakened the Nika’s powers during his fight with Kaido, reaching Gear 5th, he used Gomu Gomu no Gigant to counter Kaido’s massive dragon form by enlarging himself.
However, unlike Gear 3rd or Gear 4th, where Luffy inflates his bones or muscles, this seems to be a pure enlargement of his entire body.
This is likely an advanced application of Nika’s “freedom” ability, allowing Luffy to enlarge his entire body from head to toe.
In the Egghead Island arc, the use of this technique has increased significantly. But when Luffy enlarged himself to stop Saint Saturn’s massive beast form and capture Kizaru, the straw hat remained its original size.
During the battle with Kaido and in previous scenes at Egghead, this detail wasn’t as apparent, but in that particular scene, it felt intentional, as if it was being emphasized.
Of course, it could just be a coincidence, but it feels like there’s a deeper meaning behind it.
Since his clothes and sandals enlarge as usual, there’s definitely a sense of inconsistency. If there’s a reason behind this, what could it be?
At the very least, that straw hat is something Luffy is merely borrowing from Shanks, not something that belongs to him.
His clothes and sandals are fully Luffy’s, but the hat being “not his” may play a role in why it doesn’t enlarge.
Moreover, it’s possible that this straw hat is no longer just an ordinary straw hat…
