The Meaning of Icarus’ Wings | The “Land of the Gods” on Top of the Red Line

The “Land of the Gods” on Top of the Red Line

In the past, Whitebeard used to speak, often while drunk, about a place called the “Land of the Gods,” which supposedly existed atop the Red Line before Mariejois. I’ve previously speculated that this place might have been named “Olympus,” especially if the foundation of One Piece is indeed based on Greek/Roman mythology.

Olympus is the mountain where the gods reside, which aligns with the image of the high-altitude Red Line. Even in the world of One Piece, Uranus, Pluton, and Poseidon are recognized as “names of the gods.” Therefore, if there were a “Land of the Gods” before Mariejois, naming it Olympus would make perfect sense.

Moreover, the ancient kingdom that existed during the Void Century has now vanished without a trace, reminiscent of the legends of Atlantis and Mu. While Mu isn’t directly related to Greek/Roman mythology, Atlantis is, with its capital, Poseidonia, clearly linked to Poseidon. This suggests that the advanced civilization of that era was connected to the Land of the Gods.

The gods who lived there may have been descendants of the Moon people. While the Moon civilization seems to draw heavily from Mayan and Aztec influences, it’s not unreasonable to think that the core influences in One Piece come from Greek/Roman mythology.

Greek mythology includes the Titanomachy, the war between the Titans and the Olympian gods, and the Gigantomachy, the battle between the Olympian gods and the giants. These could parallel the war during the Void Century, while the upcoming great battle might surpass these conflicts, deciding the future dominion of the world. Could Vegapunk’s message be the spark that ignites this conflict?

As a pacifist, Vegapunk likely abhors war, but if he doesn’t see the current world as peaceful, he might believe that fighting is necessary to achieve true peace. Perhaps that’s the sentiment behind his leaving the message in the first place.
