The Two Crimes Committed by Vegapunk | Confirmed as Historical Research
Confirmed as Historical Research
Vegapunk admits to committing two crimes and mentions that he’s ready to be either captured or executed. Considering that his message is set to be broadcast upon his death, it’s clear that he’s confessing to violating the World Government’s taboos. Given the severity of his crime, which warrants such punishment, it’s almost certain that one of his crimes is the forbidden study of history—researching the Void Century.
Like Professor Clover, the scholars of Ohara, and Robin, Vegapunk likely knew that delving into such research was a capital offense, but he proceeded anyway. These scholars were driven by their passion for knowledge and did not view historical research as a crime, despite the World Government’s severe stance against it.
Vegapunk stated that he has no intention of debating the morality of the World Government’s decision to forbid historical research, much like Professor Clover and the scholars of Ohara likely felt. The World Government has outlawed historical research, claiming that it could lead to the resurrection of ancient weapons capable of destroying the world. This essentially acknowledges the existence of these ancient weapons, which in turn, piques the interest of archaeologists, leading them to question who created these weapons and why.
The prohibition on historical research seems to have backfired, fostering a desire to uncover these hidden truths. While the existence of ancient weapons has been confirmed within the story, the general public may still view them as mere legends. Nevertheless, for archaeologists, the World Government’s stance on ancient weapons only deepens the mystery, driving them to uncover the truth.
It seems Vegapunk’s curiosity about what the World Government is truly trying to hide led him to commit this crime. He likely believes that the existence of advanced civilizations in the past, their ideologies, and the potential future submersion of the world are the real taboos the World Government is hiding. This understanding of the truth might have solidified his understanding of why historical research is forbidden.
So, one of the two crimes is definitely this, but what about the other one…?
