In ONE PIECE Chapter 1116, Vegapunk mentioned the Roger Pirates, who learned the truth of the world, and Rayleigh told Vegapunk that old men shouldn’t take away the joy of the youth. This time, let’s delve into Rayleigh’s thoughts and the reasoning behind Shanks and Luffy!
The Meaning of Not Taking Away the Joy of Youth
Vegapunk revealed that during the Void Century, the world was submerged under the sea due to the use of Ancient Weapons, and he apologized for creating the Mother Flame, which was stolen and used as a power source, leading to the loss of countless lives. He also questioned why the Roger Pirates, knowing the truth, did not take any action.
Vegapunk is likely aware that Rayleigh and other Roger Pirates are still alive somewhere and probably wishes to ask them directly why they remained silent. Rayleigh, while listening to Vegapunk’s broadcast, was drinking heavily and commented that old men talk too much and shouldn’t take away the joy of the youth.
This remark seems to be Rayleigh’s answer to Vegapunk’s question. But what does he mean by “not taking away the joy of the youth”? It seems that Rayleigh refers to the process of the younger generation discovering Raftel on their own as the “joy,” and he finds it “nonsense” for Vegapunk to reveal too much.
While Vegapunk is trying to alert the world to an impending crisis that could threaten humanity’s future, Rayleigh and Roger probably believed that knowing about such a crisis would spoil the “joy” of the journey. As I’ve written before, the reason Rayleigh and Roger didn’t act back then is likely because any action taken at that time wouldn’t have changed the world. They believed that only in the current era, with the emergence of the two kings, could meaningful change occur.
From Rayleigh’s words in Chapter 1116, it’s clear that he and Roger believed that the youth of today must reach Raftel and learn the truth on their own, and only then can the world change—or at least, there’s a chance it could. The future is always uncertain and unclear, but one thing Rayleigh seems sure of is that someone will surpass them. And it seems he believes that someone is Luffy…
