Sakazuki and Sengoku! Do the Fleet Admirals Know the Truth? | Is the Navy on the Side of the People?

In ONE PIECE Chapter 1116, we saw Sakazuki’s reaction to Vegapunk’s message, which seemed to suggest that he was already aware of the information Vegapunk was revealing. Let’s explore this further!

Sengoku’s Reaction

Before diving into Sakazuki’s reaction to Vegapunk’s message, let’s consider the response of Sengoku, the former Fleet Admiral. While listening to Vegapunk, Sengoku was seen munching on his usual rice crackers, but the way he was eating them seemed rather abnormal.

I felt like he was conflicted—wanting to avoid hearing the message but unable to stop himself. It was as if he was trying to escape from the reality of what he was hearing. In other words, Sengoku might have already known or at least suspected the truth that Vegapunk was discussing, making the message hit close to home.

If Sengoku did indeed know the truth but remained silent, his conscience would undoubtedly weigh heavily on him. Given Sengoku’s character, it’s hard to imagine he wouldn’t feel guilty, especially if he knew that the World Government possessed ancient weapons, and that this silence led to the destruction of Lulusia Kingdom and the rising sea levels.

Vegapunk, feeling the weight of his own guilt, even apologized by prostrating himself, saying that Mother Flame was stolen from him. It’s possible that Sengoku felt the same way.

Tsuru, who was also present, commented on Sengoku’s frantic eating, saying, “You’re going to choke, you fool.” This might suggest that Tsuru, too, was aware of the content of Vegapunk’s message and was trying to comfort Sengoku by implying, “It’s not your fault.”

As Fleet Admirals, both Sengoku and Sakazuki would have had direct interactions with the Celestial Dragons, particularly the Five Elders. It wouldn’t be surprising if they were privy to secrets. Sakazuki’s reaction, especially his angry outburst, “You’re telling everything, Vegapunk…,” suggests that he too knew more than he let on.

If Sengoku feels guilt, what could Sakazuki be feeling?
