The Promise Joy Boy Couldn’t Keep | Did Failing the Promise Lead to the Sinking of the Ancient World?

Was the Promise to Eliminate Imu? The Reason Behind the Fear

Joy Boy made a promise to the mermaid princess of Fish-Man Island 800 years ago but ultimately failed to fulfill it. Could this failure have involved Imu?
Let’s explore this idea further!

Did Failing the Promise Lead to the Sinking of the Ancient World?

During the Void Century, Joy Boy made a promise to the mermaid princess of the time—likely the ancient weapon Poseidon.

Judging by Luffy’s modern-day promise to Shirahoshi to one day take her to walk through the forests of the surface world, it seems likely that Joy Boy’s promise was similar.

Perhaps the promise was to create a world where mermaids, Fish-Men, and humans could coexist—a world free of discrimination.

To achieve this, Joy Boy would have had to fundamentally reshape the world.

However, he failed to do so, as evidenced by the apology inscribed on the Poneglyph sent to Fish-Man Island.

According to Vegapunk, ancient continents existed but sank beneath the ocean due to rising sea levels. Modern humans live on the remaining scraps of land.

Combining this with Joy Boy’s unfulfilled promise, it seems possible that his failure directly led to the catastrophic sinking of the ancient world.

Although Vegapunk didn’t explicitly identify who caused the ancient world’s destruction, the erasure of the Lulusia Kingdom, seismic disturbances, and rising sea levels caused by Imu’s use of ancient weapons suggest that Imu was responsible.

No villain in the ONE PIECE world, no matter how evil, has shown the capability—or the sheer madness—to deliberately sink the world into the sea.

Imu and the FIVE ELDERS, however, display a level of twisted morality that suggests they could enact such destruction without hesitation.

Characters like Kaido and Doflamingo may have spoken of “destroying the world,” but they referred to toppling the societal order, not literal annihilation.

If Imu and the initial Twenty Kings had planned to sink the world, Joy Boy would have had to stop them to honor his promise to Poseidon.

This likely included eliminating Imu, who might have been the leader of the Twenty Kings.

Interestingly, Imu still seems to fear Joy Boy to this day.
