Is Garp Frozen But Still Alive?
It seems that Blackbeard has returned to Pirate Island, Hachinosu, after being away.
Blackbeard had been waiting off Winner Island, near the route that at least one of the three pirate crews—Straw Hat Pirates, Kid Pirates, or Heart Pirates—would have to take after leaving Wano Country with a copy of the Road Poneglyph. When the Heart Pirates appeared, he ambushed them, defeated Law, and destroyed their submarine, likely obtaining the Road Poneglyph copy in the process.
Meanwhile, Garp and SWORD launched an assault on Hachinosu, destroying much of the town Blackbeard loved and rescuing Koby, whom Blackbeard had intended to use as a bargaining chip with the World Government to establish the Blackbeard Kingdom.
Upon returning, Blackbeard is furious with Pizarro for allowing Koby to be taken.
Pizarro, with his Island-Island Fruit, is arguably the most suited to defending Hachinosu. If the Blackbeard Kingdom ever becomes a reality, he would likely serve as the Minister of Defense. Blackbeard’s rage stems from Pizarro’s failure to fulfill this role.
However, Blackbeard doesn’t only express anger—he also gives praise.
The one being praised is Kuzan.
Though Kuzan was injured by Shiryu, he ultimately managed to freeze Garp, his former mentor and a Navy hero, securing a victory. It seems, however, that Garp is not dead, but frozen and held captive.
Blackbeard praises Kuzan for this accomplishment, but I can’t help but feel that tension may arise from this.
Burgess doesn’t seem to trust Kuzan, and it’s understandable that accepting a former Navy Admiral as an ally would be difficult. Blackbeard’s praise for Kuzan could cause resentment within the crew.
After all, Kuzan also failed to prevent Koby’s rescue, and without the support of his crewmates, he might not have been able to capture Garp.
If the Blackbeard Pirates are meant to be a modern-day version of the Rocks Pirates…
Blackbeard has said that the Blackbeard Pirates are not a friendly group.
While we haven’t yet seen any betrayals or infighting within the crew, this latest incident could sow discord, potentially leading to a future where such behavior becomes common.
Meanwhile, a major event is about to befall the Straw Hats as well!
