In ONE PIECE Chapter 1122, Imu displayed a reaction of intense fear when sensing Joy Boy’s Haki. Could this indicate that Imu is, in fact, a deeply fearful person?
This time, I’ll be diving into this possibility!

Imu’s Trauma from Joy Boy

As I’ve written about before, it’s almost certain that Imu has been deeply traumatized by the existence of Joy Boy…
The fact that Imu could sense Joy Boy’s Haki from the distant Holy Land of Mary Geoise is intriguing, but what stands out most is the extraordinary level of fear they exhibited.
Trauma is something that often lies dormant but resurfaces as a mental flashback when triggered by a similar situation to the one that originally caused it, bringing with it a profound sense of psychological pain.

Currently, Imu is the true highest authority in the world, with even the FIVE ELDERS kneeling before them. In addition to being immensely powerful themselves, Imu is surrounded by layers of protection and is considered a being who technically does not exist in this world, making them arguably the safest individual on the planet…

And yet, despite all of this, the very presence of Joy Boy’s Haki causes Imu to scream in terror and collapse. This suggests that Joy Boy must have inflicted an immense amount of fear upon them…
Humans tend to fear death more than anything else. Regardless of whether one is a king or a slave, death is an inevitable fate, and though we all know this, it is human nature to not want to die…
It’s likely that Joy Boy made Imu feel the terror of death, leaving a deep, unhealed wound in Imu’s psyche as a lasting trauma.

This raises the possibility that Imu never confirmed Joy Boy’s death, or perhaps knew that Joy Boy’s return was destined…
I suspect that Imu, who barely survived an encounter with Joy Boy, has lived for 800 years in fear that Joy Boy would one day return to finish the job.
If that’s the case, it would mean Imu harbors an overwhelming fear of death, possibly even more so than their fear of Joy Boy.

Understanding this might also explain why Imu underwent the Perpetual Youth Operation, as well as their desire to act as a god in the current era…
