Why Did Joy Boy Become a Pirate? | Was the Continent Too Confining?

Was the Continent Too Confining?

Oden found the closed-off country of Wano to be confining and longed for the outside world from a young age.
Unknown lands, different races, unique foods and cultures, and incredible natural phenomena…
Even if someone was born and raised in a prosperous country, there is still a strong desire to experience the unknown, and the allure of the outside world is powerful.

Just as Oden sought adventure, so did Roger and Whitebeard, and of course, Luffy as well.
It’s highly possible that Joy Boy set out to sea in search of such adventures.

We don’t know how the people of that time perceived their history, but we do know that the Blue Planet’s history is intertwined with the lunar civilization.
It’s possible that this history was passed down as legend, and Joy Boy might have had a dream of confirming the truth behind it.

If Luffy were to learn of the lunar civilization’s existence, he would be extremely curious and likely want to visit the moon himself.
So far, Vegapunk hasn’t mentioned the lunar civilization in his discussions, and while Eneru discovered and revived an ancient city on the moon, he might be one of the few who knows about it.

If Joy Boy had a dream of uncovering the truth behind such a history, it’s likely he would have needed to travel the world.
But what if such adventurous voyages were forbidden during the Void Century?

Given that the population and the number of countries were likely much larger than they are today, wars might have been more frequent and widespread.
If the world was in such a state, it would have been difficult for people to venture abroad, and many nations might have prohibited it to prevent sensitive information from leaking to other countries. In such a restrictive environment, Joy Boy might have found the world too confining and set out to sea.
Being unable to explore the world because of restrictions imposed by kings and governments would indeed be frustrating and suffocating.
Another possibility to consider is that Joy Boy might have been royalty from somewhere.
