Though only shown in silhouette, Joy Boy’s figure was finally revealed, and according to Vegapunk, he was the first pirate.
Why did he become a pirate?
This question is incredibly intriguing, isn’t it?
This time, I’ll be diving into that mystery!
The First Pirate, Joy Boy
Vegapunk introduced Joy Boy as the first man to be called a pirate in history. Considering the fact that there were multiple continents during the Void Century, it makes sense that there were no pirates before him.
When large continents exist, human activities are naturally more centered on land, and fewer people would be involved with the sea overall.
However, trade would have necessitated the use of ships for transportation, and it’s likely that there were those who preyed on these shipments.
These marauders might be the image of what we typically think of as pirates, but it’s possible that when Joy Boy was called a “pirate,” it had a slightly different meaning.
A “pirate” is generally thought of as a thief who operates on the sea, while “bandit” refers to one who operates on land.
It’s hard to imagine Joy Boy as a common thief, though.
Surely, when he defeated his enemies, he would have taken their cargo as spoils of war, but it’s clear that this was not his primary purpose, as we can easily infer from watching Luffy’s actions.Personally, I believe that Joy Boy’s way of life, in which he answered to no one and lived freely, made him a man without a country. This, in turn, meant that he didn’t listen to the orders of any nation’s king, which led to him being branded as a rebel.
Therefore, Joy Boy might not have been a thief of the sea, but rather a “pirate” in the sense of being a rebel against all nations.
In the world of ONE PIECE, pirates are feared and despised by both the World Government and the public, mainly because they are seen as dangerous criminals.
However, this may be a lingering sentiment from the time when the original pirate, Joy Boy, was rebelling against the world.
So why did Joy Boy become a “pirate”? The reason behind this is incredibly intriguing!
