In ONE PIECE Chapter 1122, Joy Boy uses the term “Haki” during a flashback to the Void Century, which confirms that the concept of Haki existed during that era.
This time, I’ll be exploring this idea in more detail!

Haki Already Existed During the Void Century

From the first part of the series, Haki was hinted at, and by the New World saga in the second part, it became a standard concept. In Chapter 1122, Joy Boy, a figure from the Void Century, uses the term Haki, revealing that this concept was already present during that time.

Haki is explained as the “power of will” that all humans possess. Although it’s described as willpower, this can be interpreted in many ways. Personally, I believe Haki is essentially life force itself. If it’s the willpower that every human has, then that will must be the will to “live” or to “thrive.”

This could also be interpreted as mental strength, but I feel that Haki is something all living things possess, and that humans, with their intelligence, are able to perceive and manipulate it consciously. The Five Elders seem to excel at controlling Haki, and it’s likely that Haki manipulation was more advanced during the Void Century than it is today. The Five Elders might be using techniques from that ancient time.

Armament Haki and Observation Haki can be explained in this way, but Conqueror’s Haki feels like something special. In Chapter 1122, the immense Haki unleashed by Joy Boy after being freed by Emet was overwhelming, clearly Conqueror’s Haki.

I’ve written about Conqueror’s Haki before, noting that only one in a million people possesses it, and it seems to be tied to certain bloodlines. Those with Conqueror’s Haki often naturally become leaders of some kind. But what exactly is Conqueror’s Haki?
