Bartolomeo and Caribou! | What Does the Future Hold for These Kindred Spirits?
Bartolomeo worships Luffy, and Caribou idolizes Teach. These two characters have some similarities, and I feel like their destinies might intersect in some way in the future…
Today, I’d like to delve into this topic!
The Leader of the Luffy Religion
Bartolomeo became infatuated with Luffy after witnessing his performance in Loguetown, leading him to develop a desire to become one of Luffy’s subordinates. This admiration is what drove him to become a pirate and set sail.
Although Bartolomeo’s desire to become a subordinate has already been realized through his role as a member of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, he now seems to act as a sort of “leader” of the Luffy Religion, spreading the word about Luffy’s greatness along with his Bartoclub crewmates.
Bartolomeo doesn’t seem to have any personal ambition to become the Pirate King or claim the One Piece; instead, he finds joy in spreading the gospel of Luffy’s greatness across the world. Of course, if it came down to it, he wouldn’t hesitate to risk his life to ensure Luffy becomes the Pirate King.
His fearless actions, like burning the Red-Haired Pirates’ flag in Shanks’ territory as part of his missionary work, demonstrate his unwavering devotion to Luffy, even if it’s somewhat one-sided. There’s no doubt that Bartolomeo would lay down his life for Luffy if necessary.
I always thought there might be other pirates like Bartolomeo out there, and recently, it was revealed that Caribou also idolizes Teach and dreams of becoming one of his subordinates. I wasn’t surprised at all by this development, but it’s clear that Bartolomeo and Caribou have slightly different motivations.Bartolomeo seems to want to idolize and deify Luffy. He doesn’t want to be under Luffy’s banner to exploit Luffy’s name for personal gain or to go on rampages as a pirate. Rather, it seems more like he views himself as being officially recognized as part of Luffy’s fan club.
Bartolomeo’s goals as a pirate are entirely driven by his devotion to Luffy, and his dream is to see Luffy crowned as the Pirate King and for everyone in the world to recognize Luffy’s greatness. In essence, Bartolomeo wants to paint the world in the color of “Straw Hat Luffy.”
However, Caribou’s goals seem to be a bit different…
Bartolomeo and Caribou! | Does Caribou Want to Be on the Winning Side?
Does Caribou Want to Be on the Winning Side?
Bartolomeo seems to want to spread Luffy’s influence across the world, but I don’t think he cares much about reaping the benefits or living a luxurious life as a result.
Caribou, on the other hand, seems to have different aspirations.Caribou probably witnessed Teach’s performance during the Summit War and became convinced that Teach is the one destined to become the Pirate King, or perhaps even the ruler of the world.
Caribou is the quintessential petty villain, engaging in criminal activities to make money as a pirate. However, to live a life of luxury and do as he pleases, he needs strength and power, which he lacks. As a result, he constantly fears the Navy and other pirates.
That’s why he dreams of becoming one of Teach’s subordinates, hoping to be protected by Teach’s name while enjoying a more lavish, carefree life.
Additionally, Teach probably seems incredibly cool in Caribou’s eyes—his fearlessness, boldness, unique ability to possess multiple Devil Fruits, and his overall appeal must captivate Caribou.
Caribou plans to offer information about the Ancient Weapons to Teach, but he doesn’t intend to retrieve them for Teach himself… It seems Caribou just wants to be on the winning side and reap the rewards once Teach conquers the world.
Bartolomeo and Caribou! | Will Their Fates Intersect?
Will Their Fates Intersect?
The fact that a character like Bartolomeo, who is a devout Luffy believer, has appeared, and that Caribou, who idolizes Teach, has also been introduced, seems to suggest that Luffy and Teach are destined to be rivals. Consequently, Bartolomeo and Caribou might also become rivals in some way.
So far, there’s been no interaction between the two, but I wonder if some event will cause them to cross paths and become rivals.
Bartolomeo is currently in a precarious situation with Shanks, and he’ll probably need to settle that score first. Meanwhile, Caribou is likely to have an encounter with Teach soon.
If an event does bring them into conflict, it probably won’t happen until later in the story. From a narrative perspective, Caribou’s possession of information about the Ancient Weapons makes him a more critical character at the moment.
I could see a scenario where Caribou, having gained favor with Teach, gets carried away, and Bartolomeo ends up getting involved.
Perhaps Caribou might attack a town where Bartolomeo has placed a Straw Hat sticker and plant a Blackbeard Pirates flag instead. In response, Bartolomeo might retaliate by tearing down Blackbeard’s flags and replacing them with Straw Hat stickers, turning it into a territory dispute that ultimately leads to a duel between the two.
This kind of rivalry might be depicted in a short cover story, but if they do fight, I think Bartolomeo would likely come out on top.
